Universal Pictures UK triumph at the BASE Awards

Distributor of the Year

The annual British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) Awards took place at Tobacco Dock on Thursday, 8th June 2017. Recognised as one of the most prestigious events for the industry, approx. 1000 attendees from major and independent distributors, retailers, media owners and agencies put on their best attire and headed for an evening of celebration hosted by broadcaster Claudia Winkleman.

The night was a roaring success for Universal Pictures UK, with the team taking home more than any other studio. An outstanding achievement of 6 awards with wins in categories for PR, Special Interest, Non-theatrical, several Film categories, and recognition as the distributor of the year.

PR initiative of the year was awarded for Star Trek Beyond, with the multi-platform project fought off competition from two other longstanding franchises, Spectre and Star Wars, and was described by the BASE judges as being the ‘freshest in terms of new ideas’.

Trophies were secured for Campaign of the Year for Special Interest for Romesh Ranganathan: Irrational Live and Campaign of the Year for Film – Non-theatrical for darts documentary House of Flying Arrows – with the judges stating that they couldn’t see how the campaign could be improved, ‘no stone was left unturned in trying to get people interested’.

Dominating the Film categories and winning two (out of four) awards, the team took to the stage once again for Campaign of the Year for Film (£1-4.99m box office) with The Witch and Campaign of the Year for Film (£5-14.99m box office) for Warcraft: The Beginning.

Regional Managing Director for UK & Japan, Ian Foster said: “We are thrilled with Universal’s 6 wins at last night’s BASE Awards. To be named ‘distributor of the year’ and then go on to be the most successful studio (with wins in five categories) was just fantastic. The evening was a wonderful celebration of the team’s hard work and achievements across such a breadth of titles and campaigns.  We look forward to continued Home Entertainment success in 2017 with fantastic slate ahead.”
