Internships – how do you choose?

Autumn is without a doubt my favourite time of year – the leaves changing colour, wearing snuggly scarves and of course starting to recruit our next batch of fabulous interns!

Here at NBCUniversal International in London, we hire over 40 interns each year across a whole range of roles including Research, Finance, Legal and Marketing, with opportunities in Film, TV and Corporate business areas. All of our internships are paid and are perfect for those looking for a sandwich year placement to complement their studies, or those about to graduate and seeking their first real role in the industry.

With so many different opportunities on offer (both at NBCU and further afield), it can be hard to decide which one is for you! Making your mind up can be a minefield, so it’s worth considering:

How much time do you have?
Internships can vary in length between companies, ranging from a few weeks or months up to a year – sometimes even longer! Here at the London office, our internships are typically 12 months long (plus a few weeks for a handover), so they’re ideal for placement years.

Do you want a “real job”, or an experience?
Not all internships are the same – some offer a taster of working life, whilst others are closer to the real deal. Generally speaking, the longer the internship, the more it will resemble an actual job. At NBCUniversal International, you can expect to be working on real business issues and making a tangible contribution to your team.

What are your long term career goals?
When choosing an internship, you should think about how it fits in with your future career plans – where do you want to be in a few years’ time, and will this internship actively help you to get there? An internship can be a great way to build new skills, especially if your planned career path isn’t directly related to your degree; it’s worth thinking about what you’d like to do in the longer term and finding an internship that will set you on the right path to achieve those goals.

What are the perks?
Every internship should have its perks, right? Whether it’s free fruit, private healthcare or new release DVDs (all of which we have!), many companies will have benefits to offer beyond your monthly salary and a job title – and sometimes those perks can make all the difference!

So do your research – see what’s out there that fits the bill, read up on what companies have to offer, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!
