Enthusiasm, excitement & experience

2016 saw the launch of a new work experience programme in Universal Pictures as part of our campus2career initiatives. Eight students from two London schools joined our Theatrical and Home Entertainment Film businesses working in teams for a period of four weeks. The programme ran from 18th July to 12th August.

The teams involved were:

Universal Pictures International (UPI) – Publicity, Promotions, Distribution, Focus Features, Dubroom, Finance.

Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) – Sales, Marketing

This year our recruitment process involved partnering with Archbishop Tenison’s School and Newham Sixth Form College to source students that were interested in the Film and Media industry. Shortlisting was done by the schools and an assessment centre was carried out in our London offices.

Although there were a lot of nervous students (and line managers!!!) on 18th July the whole experience was a success with valuable learnings all round. The students had centrally run sessions twice a week where they came together away from their teams – these included talks from the President of Distribution, Duncan Clark and the EVP, UPHE Content Group, Helen Parker, as well as trips to our creative advertising agency Made in Wonderland and our Working Title offices. A particular highlight was a trip to the Global Radio Studios where the students were introduced to Vernon Kay (I think I may have been more excited than them!) and shown how radio producers present their shows. The campus2career team also ran sessions on recruitment, CV skills and social media.

The feedback from the students was extremely positive with individuals describing how they were inspired by the speakers, helped to make decisions about the future and learning transferrable skills. We thoroughly enjoyed the student’s enthusiasm and excitement, with participants enjoying their management experience, learning to give feedback and explain processes thoroughly.

Overall, our first year was a success and we look forward to many more, growing a pipeline of work experience students that may one day become our Interns (or Future Leaders!)
